I'm always on the lookout for good snacks because I'm a grazer in the kitchen. Late at night - watch out, 'cause I'm rummaging through the kitchen looking for something to nibble on. I also like healthy snacks that I can take out of the house in a hurry without any fuss or mess. Well this product isn't one of the latter.
We had stopped by one of the Dejon Delights stores on a trip to Alaska (an unbelievable trip that I highly recommend) and I remembered this salmon being great, so I ordered several packages online.
My packages took the trip from Alaska to Atlanta in about 8 to 10 days since I didn't care to pay extra for fast shipping. When it arrived and I opened the package, it wasn't as I remembered, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. When ordering it, I was thinking of dried jerk salmon that I had in so many places in Alaska and the picture on the web site didn't look wet, which is the picture you are seeing right here. It doesn't look wet to me. It probably said it on the web site, but me being in a hurry as usual meant I didn't read too carefully. Oh well.
So it's wet with smoked salmon juices in the package, which sadly means I won't be taking it out of the house to eat. I like to have quick bites during the day if I am out to keep me from being ravenous and eating stupid things like french fries at McDonald's, but this won't be one of those things I take out of the house - way too wet and salmony smelling. But that's okay.
Another surprise is that, even though they are pre-cut into nice strips, the skin is still on them. I don't see that on the picture either, although I'm sure the web site says something about it somewhere. I don't know about you, but I don't like eating salmon skin unless it's crispy from the grill or crispy in my salmon skin roll I get at the local sushi restaurant.
So that means I've now got to take a little time to de-skin the strips in order to eat. It's not hard since they are smoked, and the skin falls off pretty easily, but there's still a little work. But it's all worth it once you go through the trouble.
It's a deep sockeye salmon red with a great maple-like smokey taste, and has a good cooked-salmon texture. It's not a soggy salmon that you might think when you read wet. It's really just the juices that come out in the package and once you store it in a container, the wetness pretty much disappears.
It's got a hint of sweetness to it, but don't let that fool you since it is chock full of great protein and Omega 3 fats. This is one filling treat and it only takes a little to do the trick. After I have de-skinned the strips, I put it in a glass tupperware bowl in the fridge and it should easily stay for about a week's worth of nibbling, depending on how much you get of course.
Other than nibbling on it, I like to put it in a bowl with some brown rice as a snack or a light lunch. Sometimes I have a side of seaweed (Japanese or Korean style) along with it and my green tea for a non-hurried, healthy, asian-style Saturday morning breakfast.
Its a great way to get more healthy proteins and fats into a pseudo-vegetarian's diet. Now it's time to order the dry variety that I remember. (After writing this review, I went back to their site and I found their dried jerk salmon as I thought I would. I'll have to wait until Salmon season (late August) when they get some more in stock to order and review that one later.)
It's not their fault that my expectations were a little different than the product that showed up, but for the health and taste alone I'll give this one 4 out of 5 stars.
