You don't have to go to a specialty store to buy gluten free cereal anymore. Your local grocery store should carry name brand gluten free cereals including Gluten Free Rice Krispies and Gluten Free Corn Flakes. However, my favorite cereals are the Gluten Free Chex varieties. They make many different kinds including Rice Chex, Corn Chex, Cinnamon Chex and even Chocolate Chex now. It's important that you buy the boxes that specifically say "Gluten Free." Even though Rice Krispies and Rice Chex are made out of rice, and Corn Flakes and Corn Chex are made out of corn, boxes not labeled Gluten Free have an ingredient called "malt flavor" which contains gluten.

I frequently reference my father, and many years ago when he was diagnosed with Celiac Disease (upwards of 25 years ago), the knowledge that malt flavor contained gluten was not something that people were aware of. My family didn't know at least, and neither did our doctors. My father ate Rice Krispies almost everyday thinking that what he was doing was making a healthy choice, when in fact he was actually hurting himself immensely. Perhaps he, and even myself, weren't as educated as we thought we were. Or perhaps there just wasn't enough information out there for us.

One downside of the Chex varieties is that this cereal is a bit pricier than other boxes of cereal, and I never see it go on sale. However, the Chex boxes are LARGE, and you do get a lot for your money. I like that. One added plus about Chex cereal is the fact that it doesn't get soggy. It stays crisp through the last bite :)
