We've kind of given up on canned/bottled salsa. It seems that every time you get one of the mass market brands, it just doesn't live up to the fresh salsas that we get in most of the Mexican restaurants we frequent. The store-bought variety always has that fake, gelatinous thickness and texture along with that bland processed taste — not so good. So when we (my wife and I) had the chance to try a lesser known variety (Melina's Mexican Salsa), we weren't exactly jumping up and down with anticipation. Read more...

I'm part Italian and love my Italian food. Since being diagnosed with Celiac Disease, I felt like I have missed out on some of my favorite Italian dishes. There are some dishes you can get out at some restaurants that are fitting for people who have food allergies and specially dietary needs. Some Italian restaurants are beginning to serve gluten free pizza and pasta dishes. Finding a chicken or veal parmigiana? Not so easy. These dishes you'll probably have to make at home. Every ingredient in these dishes is necessary and each makes it delicious, including the breadcrumbs. Read more...

It seems like we are all trying to watch our weight, our diets and what we are eating. However, it's difficult not to eat some foods we love, especially snack foods. One of my biggest downfalls is chips. Lucky for me (or not lucky for me?) is that potato chips have always been, for the most part, gluten free. When I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease, that was one thing that I did not have to change! Potato chips were something I enjoyed eating, could be bought at a "normal" store, and were cheap (compared to other gluten free foods). Like I stated before, chips can be a downfall. Read more...

Summertime in New jersey makes me think of the Shore and the Boardwalk. One of the greatest things to do besides bask on the beach and play in the ocean waves is cruise along the Boardwalk for the shops, games and, of course, the food. It's a little tough for someone with Celiac Disease or any type of gluten sensitivity or intolerance to find something to eat (or enjoy the foods you used to eat and love!). One of the best summertime foods is ice cream! Read more...

I've become quite accustomed to Glutino putting out stellar products, so I was hoping that these cookies weren't like some of the mealy and overly-sweet treats I've had form other companies. Glutino did not let me down. Read more...

If you’re a mom like me, most likely you go through bread like there’s no tomorrow. Toast, sandwiches, French toast, a slice of bread with jam… bread is any easy and effortless snack. At least one would hope. If you’re like me though? You can’t tolerate gluten. And if you’re like my son? You can’t tolerate gluten or casein. Sadly, this eliminates so many bread choices. Namaste is my absolute favorite brand when I am looking for quality gluten-free (and allergen-free) mixes. I love to create my own recipes in the kitchen, but I don’t ever come close to the quality I find with the Namaste label. A family favorite is their Spice Cake Mix. Read more...

I grew up in New York and live in New Jersey, so there is no shortage of delis with amazing bagels. My old favorites were the classics: sesame, onion, everything, or just a plain 'ol bagel. The toppings always varied- butter, cream cheese, jelly, a combination of cream cheese and jelly, a fancy flavor of cream cheese, toasted, untoasted... the "bagel man" had it all. Read more...

Dessert is my favorite meal of the day, hands down. About two and a half years ago, at 28 years old, I developed peanut, tree nut, and coconut allergies. It was a weird and unfortunate situation, yet I was still able to find some of my favorite sweets- doughnuts, pastries, cupcakes and (most of all) cookies- to eat. I just had to be careful and read the ingredients and nutrition labels carefully. About a year and a half ago, I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease, just like my late father. I had yet another obstacle to overcome. Read more...

A few years ago, I accidentally came across Glutino Original Crackers. I live in Florida, and I was driving to the nearest port to take my son on his very first cruise. Since my son was diagnosed with autism, I put him on a strict gluten-free, casein-free (GF/CF) diet. Although the cruise line assured me they would cook to serve his needs, I was extremely uneasy about feeding my child while sailing the seas for four days. On route to the ship, I encountered a health food store I had never been to… over an hour from where I lived. Read more...
